
In the present paper, readers are first familiarized with windblown sand-induced effects on railways and sand mitigation measures.

A rational approach to design, analysis and performance assessment of sand mitigation measures is still taken in the scientific literature, design guidelines and standards. To counter its effects, a number of sand mitigation measures have been proposed, mainly through a trial-and-error empirical approach. Windblown sand affects infrastructure construction and serviceability, and undermines users’ safety.

The sand transported by the wind accumulates around any kind of built obstacle. Such railway projects are now experiencing windblown sand, an unfamiliar problem to many civil and structural engineers. In recent years, emerging States have been pushing the planning and design of railway megaprojects across arid and desert regions. Sand is lifted and transported by the wind and accumulates around any natural or artificial obstacle, 9 railways included. 4 Failure stories induced by windblown sand demonstrate that this issue is the key environmental factor relevant to the design of desert railways. This is in analogy to other design problems that emerged in the history of structural engineering from other application fields, and which offered the stimulus towards crucial scientific and technical advancements for example, studies on fatigue of materials, initiated by the railway accident near Versailles in 1842, 3 or on brittle fracture, triggered by the catastrophic failures of the Liberty ships during World War II. 2 Considerable parts of these megaprojects systematically cross arid and desert environments for the first time, and are subjected to the action of windblown sand, an emerging new design issue which is unfamiliar to many civil and structural engineers. For instance, the Middle Eastern countries have allocated about USD 260 billion to build 40,000 km of railway tracks up to 2030. The proposed approach paves the way toward a comprehensive hybrid approach to the performance assessment of SMM. Finally, a life-cycle cost analysis is carried out to assess extra-costs and savings derived from the implementation of the SMM. A probabilistic approach for determining windblown sand action and frequencies of sand removal maintenance is applied to a case study on a desert railway. In a hybrid approach perspective, wind-sand tunnel measurements allow to properly tuned cheaper wind-sand computational simulations of the full-scale SMM performance. Wind-sand tunnel tests are carried out to characterize the incoming sand flux in open field conditions. In this study, the authors propose a novel hybrid approach to derive the life-cycle performance of SMM based on the combination of reliable wind-sand tunnel tests and innovative wind-sand computational simulations. As such, innovative approaches to properly quantify windblown sand action and to design SMM are needed in the current state-of-art and practice.
